Meek Mill, Rihanna, 6LACK, Megan Thee Stallion and Mariah Carey are just a few of the many artists who have signed a letter pushing for California lawmakers to sign two police reform bills. Joining Rihanna and company, Anderson .Paak, A$AP Ferg, Billie Eilish and Don Toliver signed the letter.
The letter urges lawmakers to pass two bills, SB 731 and SB 776. SB 731 would create a system in which officers would lose certification if they are commit serious misconduct or are convicted of a serious crime. SB 776 would require increased transparency when officers use excessive force.
“While the killing of George Floyd inspired sustained outrage, protests, and reporting, the people of California have long understood the need to properly address the actions and accountability of police,” the letter states.
“For too long, courts have undermined the intent of the State’s laws, allowing bad police officers to violate the rights of those they are meant to protect. In addition, a lack of transparency and a deficient recordation system has shielded officers who abuse their authority and tarnish the integrity of California’s law enforcement. We can fix this,” the letter continues.
If the bills make it through state legislature this week, they will be voted upon on the state’s floor of assembly as soon as this month.
