The New Orleans Saints may have drafted the eventual successor to Drew Brees when the team selected Garrett Grayson in the 2015 draft. The rookie third round pick from Colorado State will have the luxury of learning from one of the best in the business, Drew Brees. When Brees made an appearance on the second day of rookie mini-camp Grayson was in awe over meeting the future hall of fame signal caller.
“He introduced himself to me. When I went up and met him, it was like, ‘Holy cow, that’s Drew Brees,'” Grayson said after rookie minicamp on Saturday, via The Times-Picayune. “It’s still kind of like the deer in the headlights. It’s a dream come true for me to be able to have this opportunity to learn from one of the best quarterbacks of all time.”
“It’s kind of hard to compare yourself to a guy that’s going to be in the Hall of Fame,” Grayson said. “If people want to compare me to him, I am totally fine with that. I hope I can be half the quarterback that he’s been.”
Drew Brees likely has many more years of playing time left so the rookie may have to sit and learn for awhile. Then again Aaron Rodgers sat for many years learning behind Brett Farve. The Saints may be in full rebuilding mode after trading Jimmy Graham the team could also elect to deal Brees if the right offer came to fruition. The time for Grayson may in fact be sooner rather than later. Whatever the task Garrett Grayson will make sure he’s ready when his number is called.
“As a competitor, I always say I want to play right away,” Grayson said. “But that’s something I said through the process. I told all the teams I met with, I have no problem sitting and learning from a guy like Drew Brees.”
