Former title challenger Mercito Gesta is expected to challenge lightweight contender Ryan Garcia in late January at the Moddy Center in Austin, Texas on DAZN.
Garcia enters the bout with a record of 23-0 and 19 knockouts. His opponent, Mercito Gesta, has put together a record of 33-3-3 with 17 knockouts.
If Gesta can get by the lightweight star, he will set himself up for major fights later in 2023. Meanwhile, Garcia is hoping to get by Gesta and take on Gervonta “Tank” Davis in Las Vegas later this year.
Garcia is not the only major lightweight contender entering the ring in January. His potential opponent, Gervonta “Tank” Davis, is also taking a fight to start the year. On Showtime Pay-Per-View, the Baltimore native will fight WBA Super Featherweight Champion Hector Garcia at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on January 7, 2023. Similar to Garcia, he is looking toward a bout in Las Vegas in April as well as another major fight against Devin Haney or Shakur Stevenson to close the year.
“I got two opponents in mind,” Davis said when asked if he would like to fight in the third or fourth quarter of 2023.
“You know who.”
A potential fight between the two lightweight contenders sets up for an amazing start to the year. Other important fights on the boxing calendar include Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez in March and Keith Thurman vs. Errol Spence Jr. potentially in February.
