Undefeated Rolando “Rolly” Romero may be in serious legal trouble. According to multiple sources, the undefeated lightweight boxer is currently facing accusations from sexual assault and rape from a number of different women. A recent report from ESPN also indicated that Romero is the subject of an open investigation conducted by the Henderson Police Department in Nevada. Details regarding the accusations against Romero are still being sorted out, but Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza has characterized Romero’s alleged actions as “disturbing” and “concerning” during a recent interview. Espinoza has not announced that the fight will be called off, but he did say that he would “keep an eye” on it moving forward.
In the event that Romero is unable to participate in the fight, a replacement has already been identified. Multiple sources have informed boxing insider Mike Coppinger that Issac Cruz would take Romero’s place in the event that the fight was changed. There’s no word as to if that would impact the date or location of the fight.
Romero nor Davis have publicly commented on the matter as of yet.
Sources: Isaac Cruz is the front-runner to replace Romero. He was strongly considered for the Davis assignment before Romero ultimately was chosen for the bout. Showtime, which is slated to televise Davis-Romero on PPV, declined comment on the situation. https://t.co/T8HEolA9rp
