The test and trails of the music industry are surely only meant for the strong and those who are willing to deal with the disadvantages and unfortunate situations that may come about. If you ask Rita Ora, she just may tell you that she knows about these things all too well. For the past few years, Rita Ora, who has seen rather impressive musical success in the UK, has been working hard to try and crack the demanding U.S. with her material. With one solo album under her belt, being released only overseas, setting her sights on the U.S. was an inevitable move. Now, it’s being reported that Rita Ora has had enough, due to the alleged lack of support from her Roc Nation label. Clinging on to California’s seven year law in regards to personal service contracts, Rita Ora is looking to be set free from the constraints of her current recording contract.
In a complaint filed on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, she’s seeking a declaratory judgment that the recording agreement she signed in 2008 at the age of 18 with Roc Nation violates California law and is unenforceable.
She’s taking such action after presenting herself as “orphaned” from Roc Nation in light of the Jay-Z company’s developing interest in sports management and other endeavors.
Rita finds herself among a growing crowd of artists like R. Kelly, August Alsina, and others, who feel like the record labels aren’t doing their part when it comes to promoting and funding them as an artist. Moments like these shine light on acts like Chance The Rapper who find themselves not relying on labels for funding and simply work with them on a distribution basis. Time will only tell how this move will play out for Rita and if this severs any personal relationships she’s built over at Roc Nation leader, Jay Z.
