Carrie is back on the big screen and she has some new tricks up her sleeve.
The remake has more character development than the Brian de Palma original and focused on how Carrie came to be. It delves more into the turbulent relationship between Carrie and her mother that lacked in the 1976 version. The film hits the mark on high school cruelty and makes you feel sorry for Carrie even though you know what is happening next.
The prom scene which is the bloody centerpiece of the film, definitely delivered. Director Kimberly Peirce makes the prom scene her own and isn’t fearful of the expectations set by the original. Expect to see more blood, electrocution, and gore than ever before.
At times the CGI went overboard to a point of looking cheesy. I’m sure some of Julianne Moore’s salary could have gone to making the pigs blood not look like Kool-Aid.
Overall the newest adaptation of Carrie holds its own and will be a favorite of the new generation. If you are a fan of the original, then you will at least appreciate the new and improved Carrie. Next time I go to the doctor and I get my eyes dilated, I’ll see if I have telekinetic powers too.
