The Timberwolves made a big decision when they drafted Kris Dun with the 5th overall selection this year in the NBA draft. It meant the beginning of an era for a new young point guard, and the end of an era with an injured Ricky Rubio manning the Timberwolves offense. The Wolves have tried valiantly to trade Rubio to potential suitors but after offers not good enough, the feeling was that Rubio would be traded later on in the season or leave in free agency next year.
When a trade is coming, no one knows, but we do know that Ricky Rubio’s time in Minnesota will be limited. Rubio has always been a bit of risk, especially because he’s injury prone and lacks consistency with his shooting ability, but nonetheless, his talents will be enough for teams who are desperate for some point guard depth. The Sacramento Kings seem to be interested in the Spanish point guard, after losing Rajon Rondo this offseason. Not only that, but they may be also missing Darren Collison at the start of the season due to a domestic violence charge. On ESPN 1500 Radio, Darren Wolfson said that the Kings were a team that was interested in the 5 year veteran. Per Dan Feldman of ProBasketballTalk:
As Glen Taylor said on this podcast a couple episodes ago, Ricky Rubio will start the season with the Wolves. But I can tell you, as I’ve said a number of times, the Sacramento Kings are a team to watch. Vlade Divac, George Karl, now George Karl into Dave Joerger. Keep an eye on the Sacramento Kings if slash when the Wolves decide to make a move on Ricky. But, again, nothing is imminent. Ricky Rubio will be with the Wolves opening night
The Kings could absolutely use a player with Rubio’s talents. With hopes of trying to be a playoff team next year, the confusing Sacramento Kings will get any point guard who will be able to pass DeMarcus Cousins the ball. With that being said, the Kings can’t really offer much for the Wolves point guard. The Wolves have shown that they want to give up Rubio at the right price, and the Kings won’t be able to convince them of that with the assets they have. With both sides far a part from a deal, we can still expect Ricky Rubio to be playing for the Wolves come opening night.
