Boxing fans are in for a number of special fights within the next eight weeks. Coming up this week, Caleb Plant will fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight title. Not long thereafter, Terence Crawford will defend his title against former titles Shawn Porter. In early December, Vasyl Lomachenko will return to Madison Square Garden and fight Richard Commey. Not to mention, Stephen Fulton, Nonito Donaire and Teofimo Lopez will also fight.
In the midst of what will be a great end to the year, Devin Haney is expected to fight Joseph “Jojo” Diaz and Gervonta Davis is scheduled to fight Rolando “Rolly” Romero in Los Angeles. However, both fights could be up in the air after Romero became the center of a sexual assault investigation in Nevada. Recent reports from multiple outlets suggest that he could be pulled out of the fight and replaced with another fight. Initially, Issac Cruz was considered to be potential replacement. Now, another name has emerged.
Following Chantelle Cameron’s unanimous decision victory against Mary McGee in Northampton, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn answered questions about upcoming fights. Towards the end of his media availability, Hearn suggested that Haney could be a potential replacement if Romero is pulled out of the fight.
“I spoke to Devin Haney and I asked, ‘Do you want me to put your name in the mix?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’ At the moment, Jojo Diaz has not signed his contract after being offered more to fight Devin Haney than he was getting offered to fight Ryan Garcia. So, we’ll see what happens,” Hearn told reporters.
“We want to make the Jojo Diaz fight, but he’s got to hurry up and sign the contract.”
