After watching last night’s snoozefest of a dunk contest, NBA veteran Paul Pierce has a new suggestion to help make the contest better for next year: Outlaw props.
Each year, there seems to be at least one participant who uses props. This year, Aaron Gordon used a prop the contest has never seen before: A black, high powered Intel drone.
His drone plans would wind up backfiring, with Gordon missing his first few attempts off its drop, sucking the excitement out of the crowd.
For Pierce, the elements of excitement and creativity are keys to winning the contest. Getting rid of these unnecessary props should be a priority, in his mind:
We need to take away the props in the dunk contest make it real again #truecreativity

To Pierce’s credit, the winner of Saturday’s dunk contest, Glenn Robinson lll of the Indiana Pacers, won the event with a dunk that did not feature any props.
Some of the greatest dunk contests in league history have featured props. However, last year’s epic duel between Aaron Gordon and Zach LaVine was solely based on creativity, and that is thought by many to be one of the all-time great dunk contests.
Perhaps Paul Pierce is onto something.
