It’s really a bitter-sweet time for NBA fans around the world. We just watched the last NBA game of the season, a thriller in fact, and although we’re celebrating the first NBA championship in the city of Cleveland, the ‘no more games until October’ feeling is settling in. But fear no more, the Olympics and summer league always get use through the tough times. With the 2016 Rio Olympics set to start soon, reports of players decisions on playing for Team USA are finally coming out.
According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Paul George, Kevin Durant, and Klay Thompson are just some of the players that are set to headline the TEAM USA roster:
Sources told ESPN that Durant, who becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1, continues to signal his availability to USA Basketball for the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro despite pullouts earlier this month ?by Golden State’s Stephen Curry, Houston’s James Harden and Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook.
Sources say Indiana’s Paul George and Golden State’s Klay Thompson are also considered locks alongside Durant for the 12-man Olympic roster that will be revealed in coming days, joining Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins, whose inclusion was first reported by The Undefeated’s Marc J. Spears earlier this month.
After tons of concern over the Zika virus outbreak in South America, many players withdrew from the Olympics and Team USA Basketball, including Russell Westbrook, James Harden and even MVP Stephen Curry. Although some have made their decision, others have not, like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony who are probably going to be the veterans of this Team USA squad. DeMarcus Cousins is said to be a guarantee and it was reported that Draymond Green accepted his invitation as well. The 12 man roster will be announced very soon and with about half the team confirmed, the other half, is still up for grabs by the 31 man Final Cut List that was made earlier this year. After last nights game, I want to see Kyrie Irving on this team, with all the point guards who withdrew, Irving would be a great addition to this Team USA roster.
