On Friday, April 26, a protest encampment of more than “200 demonstrators” and “15 tents” been re-established at Gould Plaza. The university’s student-led publication, Washington Square News, reports that the tents were eventually removed “at the direction of New York City Police Department officers, as a condition of keeping police outside the encampment.” As a result, approximately five dozen demonstrators were able to remain throughout the night as temperatures dipped.
Protestors have reportedly demanded that the university be more transparent in its distribution of funds to entities connected to Israel, divest funds from activities connected to Israel’s armed forces and the complete shut down of its satellite campus Tel Aviv. However, the university has previously responded by saying that it is not considering divestment from Israel amid protests.
