The Denver Nuggets have shown serious interest in trading point guard Ty Lawson, and Lawson has openly been looking for a trade out of Denver.
Lawson and the Nuggets may or may not get their wishes during NBA Draft time come June 25. Chad Ford of ESPN reports that Denver has been trying to work out a deal with Sacramento to send them Lawson in exchange for the no. 6 pick in the draft:
Nuggets have been trying to make that deal regardless, but so far they can’t get Kings (or anyone else for that matter) to bite on Lawson.
A top ten pick in this draft would serve either team well, and apparently the Nuggets would rather have that option than stick with Lawson. Kings head coach George Karl has shown prior interest in bringing Lawson, who he coached in Denver, to Sacramento.
Trading for a point guard of Lawson’s caliber, even if he’s not considered one of the elites, would be an upgrade for the Kings at the position, but it’s still understandable as to why they aren’t necessarily jumping at this trade. They’ve had nice development from their recent draft picks Nik Stauskas and Ben McLemore, so looking to build on that youth trend and remaining somewhat patient is likely more of a priority than gambling on a point guard that isn’t guaranteed to take you over the hump.
Hopefully for the Kings sake, that patience pays off and they can acquire someone better than Lawson with that draft pick.
