Nezi Momodu is a special talent!
As a writer, I sit and listen to a number of new artists that are sent my way. After every listen, I do my best to give constructive feedback, write honest reviews and be open to new sounds. At times, this can be a tiring duty despite my undying love for music, specifically R&B and Rap. Fortunately, there are artists that always seem to come through and blow me away.
Reggie Becton, Bryant Taylorr and Daisha McBride are just a few of the artists that come to mind in this way. They stand out not only because they are talented, but more because they create moments in time. I remember seeing Bryant Taylorr live for the first time at Slim + Husky’s “Unplugged” event and I can recall speaking to Reggie Becton for the first time during an interview.
In the same way, I remember getting off the late shift at work and I was walking to the pizza shop when I hear YouTube Music conclude playing Denzel Curry’s Zuu and switch over to a subtle intro followed by a hard-hitting beat.
“Ok, we came to ball like Sosa or Jeter. I’ll put yo’ ass right out the four-seater,” she rapped.
At the moment, I had no idea who Nezi Momodu was or how YouTube Music came to suggest her music, but I’m glad the streaming service did. I replayed her standout track, “Jugg Everything,” at least six times in a row. From there, I began digging through her 2018 mixtape, The Endless Hour, and watching videos of her doing cyphers at Texas Tech University. I was sold! Her unique wordplay, unbreakable confidence and dynamic talent was undeniable. The only thing that I needed to know was when I could hear more music from her. Three years after that first audible encounter, I have my answer.
2022 has been a great year for Nezi Momodu. Not only has she released three new videos and gone viral on TikTok, but she also appeared on Logic’s most recent album. Now, she’s ready to deliver her latest project, The Pound. The 10-track project will feature previously released singles like “N.E.Z,” “On Gawd” and “The Pound” featuring D-Truce. The Pound is set to arrive on August 5, 2022. Check out the album artwork and tracklist below.
