Ads, ads and more ads! That’s what some Netflix subscribers could experience this fall. The popular streaming service has announced that it will introduce an ad-supported tier as early as next month. Beginning November 1, subscribers in Canada and Mexico will be able to access the ad-supported tier for as little as $6.99 per month in the U.S. Later in the month, a comparable service will be offered in the following countries: the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Spain.
How will the ad-supported tier differ from the basic tier? Well, it will be $3 cheaper and offer content in HD. However, the ad-supported tier will not offer the platform’s full catalog. Netflix Chief Operating Officer Greg Peters has said that a “limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions.”
“We’re going to be working on reducing that over time,” Peters added, according to Variety.
“[The new ad tier] represents an exciting opportunity for advertisers — the chance to reach a diverse audience, including younger viewers who increasingly don’t watch linear TV, in a premium environment with a seamless, high-resolution ads experience.”
As for the actual ads themselves, they will be targeted toward viewers based on the age and gender they provide during the sign-up process. Each commercial will be approximately 15 to 30 seconds with an average of four to five minutes of ads per hour. With that said, newer theatrical releases will push ads to the beginning similar to that of trailers shown in theaters.
