The All-Star game will lose its East vs. West format, and the two players earning the most votes will be “captains.” These captains will draft their teams from the pool of players voted in.
This adds a new level of drama; imagine LeBron James drafting Kyrie Irving over Isaiah Thomas. Imagine Russell Westbrook passing over Kevin Durant for a borderline All-Star like Bradley Beal. This adds a massive new level of intrigue.
So, who will the captains be? Well, had this format been in effect last season, the two captains would have been Stephen Curry and LeBron James. James will probably be one again this time, and the second could be Curry again, but could also definitely be someone like Westbrook, James Harden or Durant.
Unfortunately, the teams will be drafted by the captains in advance; it’d be pretty exciting to see it happen live on TV half an hour before tip-off.
Furthermore, the two teams playing for charity is a very cool touch.
