Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, is expected to receive a contract extension but he probably didn’t expect the following to happen. The National Anthem protests that have happened throughout the league have delayed Goodell’s contract extension. Players, owners, and the commish have met to discuss the protests but it doesn’t appear anything is going to change in that regard as of now.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the following:
“Goodell’s deal is still expected to be completed and has been papered, sources told ESPN, but the process has been slowed while the overwhelming majority of the NFL’s attention has been diverted to handling the anthem issue, which has affected TV ratings, merchandise sales and the country’s feelings about football.”
Let’s also not forget the ongoing Ezekiel Elliot situation that continues to fight his six-game suspension. Despite not being convicted by the courts, Goodell has taken punishment into his own hands. Fighting with the league’s most powerful owner Jerry Jones may also play into the part of Goodell’s contract extension. Adam Schefter made one thing very clear in his report about Goodell’s status as league commissioner.
“The anthem issue has overridden everything — and I do mean everything,” one source told ESPN.
