There is never really a bad time for a Spike Lee joint. Well the critically acclaimed Spike Lee is back with a new star studded film, ‘Chi-Raq’. If you can guess what the movie revolves around then you are correct, ultimately the movie focuses on the ongoing fight against gun violence that plagues the streets of Chicago.
‘Chi-Raq’, written by Lee and Kevin Willmott is described as a modern day adaptation of the Greek play ‘Lysistrata’ by Aristophanes. For those who are curious as to what ‘Lysistrata’ is, short and straight to the point, it is a anti-war comedy. For Spike’s adaptation, a child was murdered by a stray bullet in Chicago’s Southside which prompts, Lysistrata and a group of women to organize a movement to put an end to violence as a whole. By doing so, the movement ignites protest for more issues around the world dealing with race, sex and well violence of course.
The cast for this film stars; Nick Cannon, Wesley Snipes, Teyonah Parris, Jennifer Hudson, Steve Harris, Harry Lennix, D. B. Sweeney, Angela Bassett, John Cusack, Dave Chappelle and last but not least Samuel L. Jackson. ‘Chi-Raq’ is in theaters this upcoming December 4, 2015 by way of Amazon Studios, 40 Acres and a Mule and Filmworks.
