Actor Michael Douglas will receive the Honorary Palme d’or during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. The special honor will be presented during the festival’s opening ceremony on May 16, 2023.
“It is always a breath of fresh air to be at Cannes, which has long provided a wonderful platform for bold creators, artistic audacities, and excellence in storytelling,” Douglas said of the annual festival.
Adding to the celebration of the actor’s work, a documentary about Douglas’ life and career will be screened on May 14 and May 16, 2023.
“This special documentary shows us how Michael, an actor, and producer like his father Kirk, had to embrace their resemblance throughout his remarkable career in order to assert his difference. The time to learn how to become Michael when your name is Douglas,” the documentary’s logline reads.
Michael Douglas, a native of New Brunswick, New Jersey, earned his first acting role as a jeep driver in the 1966 film, Cast a Giant Shadow. Over the last 60 years, he’s blossomed into one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors. He’s appeared in Basic Instinct, Avengers: Endgame, Olive Stone’s Wall Street and many other classic films. In return, he has received two Academy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award.
“From my first time here in 1979 for The China Syndrome to my most recent premiere for Behind the Candelabra in 2013, the Festival has always reminded me that the magic of cinema is not just in what we see onscreen but in its ability to impact people all around the world,” he added.
“After more than 50 years in the business, it’s an honor to return to the Croisette to open the Festival and embrace our shared global language of film.”
