This year, HBO and WarnerMedia are putting together a celebration honoring the 20th anniversary of its greatest program, The Wire. Led by David Simon, the serialized drama explored the ups and downs of the drug game in Baltimore, Maryland. With iconic characters like Avon Barksdale and Stringer Bell, the show earned a spot in the hearts of fans across the globe while picking up two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
Funny enough, the show’s lore only grew after its final episode aired in 2008. While The Wire is known as one of the greatest television series of all-time in present day, it was not a massive hit while it was on air. The show’s fan base grew as the show made its way to BET and many of its star actors like Idris Elba and Michael B. Jordan went on to have fruitful careers.
Twenty years after The Wire debuted, HBO is giving it the red carpet treatment. A spotlight page honoring the show is available on HBO Max. The premium cable channel is also calling on Method Man to host a podcast called The Wire at 20.
“The Wire was far from a surefire hit from day one. Host Method Man walks through The Wire’s long journey to the screen and the initial challenges it faced. Series co-creators David Simon and Ed Burns join to discuss how their backgrounds in journalism and law enforcement shaped their vision for the series. Executive producer Nina Noble and writer/producer George Pelecanos weigh in on how the writer’s room was sometimes a shouting match,” the first episode’s description reads.
The first episode debuted on June 2, 2022 with Method Man and HBO Max. Check it out below.
