
Melissa “Lizzo” Jefferson will reportedly star in Amazon MGM Studios’ Rosetta. The GRAMMY Award winner will star as the legendary Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the film produced by Kevin Beisler, and Significant Productions’ Nina Yang Bongiovi. Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Natalie Chaidez of The Flight Attendant and Kwynn Perry of The Burned Photo to write the script.
Tharpe is legendary figure in Rock n’ Roll and popular music, influencing the likes of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Aretha Franklin. As an incomparable songwriter, singer and guitarist, she has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Blues Hall of Fame. Still writing, recording and releasing music, Tharpe passed away at 58 years old after suffering a stroke.
Lizzo previously appeared in Hustlers alongside Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez and Keke Palmers. She’s also held voice acting roles in The Simpsons, UglyDolls and The Proud Family. The chart-topping star also produced and starred in the Emmy Award-winning reality TV series, Watch Out For the Big Grrrls.
Rosetta starring Lizzo is currently in the development stage and does not yet have a release date.
