This deal is set to make Stafford the highest paid player in NFL history. This title previously belonged to Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who signed an extension earlier this offseason. Carr’s current deal gives him $25 Million per year, and Stafford’s is set to surpass that.
The market is treating quarterbacks well so far. This is good news for quarterbacks with expiring contracts.
QB salary market being reset, good news for Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Kirk Cousins. QB salaries about to skyrocket.

Stafford has performed well for the Lions. The former Georgia University star has been the leader of the Lions since day one. Although he has not had much playoff success, his regular season numbers are up there with some of the top quarterbacks in the league. He’s thrown for over 4,000 yards in the previous six seasons, with him reaching 5,000 yards in 2011.
Stafford is a quarterback a team like the Lions desperately needs to keep around. He constantly produces at a high rate and will always put on a show come game time. He may not have the playoff success, but that does not mean that it will never come. Keeping Stafford around for five more years gives the Lions time to build around him and get this team back to playoff contention. They have failed in previous years. This is a good thing to happen if you are a Lions fan.
