Lil Nas X continues making history with his mega-hit Old Town Road as the song reaches diamond certification.
Old Town Road featuring Billy Ray Cyrus launched Lil Nas X into a prolific music career in a short amount of time. “A lot of walls were taken down by this song,” says Billy Ray Cyrus to TIME.
The song became the longest-running No. 1 song on Billboard charts, breaking a record set by Mariah Carey in 1996. Old Town Road reigned supreme for 17 consecutive weeks, with additional remixes featuring Mason Ramsey, Young Thug, and BTS.
Lil Nas X even scored two BET hip-hop awards during the 2019 ceremony for the genre-bending track. Now, the pop song stands as the fastest record in history to earn diamond status. Albums and songs selling at least 10,000,000 copies are recognized as diamond records.
