From its earliest days, R&B and Soul have found a home in the city of New York. Whether its the Apollo Theater, SOBs or a hole-in-the-wall club in Harlem, there are always places for listeners to uncover their new favorite artists. Recently, Citizen Magazine opened up a new space for artists to showcase their talents. As part of the publication’s latest release, Citizen Magazine invited LEMMONS to the Big Apple for a performance of “Taurus & Orion” from her EP, Like The Fruit.
Shot at Candy Studio on Canal Street, the Denver native is accompanied by a collection of greenery as she flexes her suite of vocal tools. Through the first minute or so, she appears to be warming up before beginning effortlessly climb up and down the stairs between lower and higher notes. Then, the horns of the production run in to punctuate her vocal performance.
“[In this song I was] seeking to honor every part of myself as a queer Black woman as well as honor the legacies of the iconic Black artists that inspire me,” LEMMONS said about her 2022 track, “Taurus & Orion.”
As a writer, I’m asked to write about artists in a way that connects them to the listener. However, the best music that I hear often leaves me without many words to use because it speaks for itself. LEMMONS’ live performance of “Taurus & Orion” is difficult to put into words because it is authentic, soulful and something you definitely need to hear.
