Knicks Rumored To Pursue Marc Gasol Next Summer
Marc Gasol, one of the most skilled bigs at the center position today, will be a free agent next summer. Gasol has kept conservative when it comes to his thoughts on possibly leaving the Memphis Grizzlies, but the rumor mill will have his name tagged in until he formally decides.
According to Ronald Tillery at the Commercial Appeal, the New York Knicks are in the mix of teams that plan to pursue Gasol next summer:
The New York Knicks don’t appear positioned to be a championship contender in the near future. But could that change by pairing Gasol with Carmelo Anthony? There already is a strong belief that Knicks boss Phil Jackson will target Gasol because of his belief that Gasol is the quintessential center to play in the triangle offense.
That would be exactly correct. Gasol’s skill set caters quintessentially to the triangle offense with his post play, shooting, and passing as a big. The Knicks don’t currently have the kind of skill bigs like Gasol to operate the triangle with centerpiece Carmelo Anthony.
Gasol is the right target for the Knicks, but he’ll certainly have options when the time comes, and it’s believed that Memphis is still the frontrunner to re-sign.
Gasol averaged 14.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 59 games last season.
