The speculation is now over as George Karl has agreed on a 4 year/ $15 million deal to become the Sacramento Kings next head coach. Karl will become Sacramento’s third coach this season, replacing Mike Malone and Tyrone Corbin.
The Kings originally announced that they had signed Corbin to be their head coach for the rest of the season, but that plan has changed. Corbin was relieved of his coaching duties Thursday, but will remain with the Kings in an advisory role. Corbin had a 7-21 record since taking over after the Kings fired Malone in December.
“I have the utmost respect for Tyrone as a coach and person,” Kings GM Pete D’Alessandro said in a statement. “He’s a man of great integrity, a consummate professional that managed a difficult situation with class and professionalism. I look forward to continuing to work with Tyrone moving forward.”
Karl last coached the Denver Nuggets in 2012-2013, when he won the Coach of the Year award. He ranks sixth on the all time wins list for a head coach with 1,131 career victories.
This will be Karl’s sixth team he’s been at the helm of. In addition to Sacramento and Denver, Karl has coached the Cavaliers, Warriors, Super Sonics, and Bucks.
