Though the San Antonio Spurs are typically one of the more drama-free organizations in the NBA, the injury situation surrounding Kawhi Leonard has caused controversy for months now. It’s been cloudy as to just how serious his injury is but his extended absence tells us that Leonard and the Spurs are taking the cautious approach with his return.
Leonard did return for a stretch in mid to late December but was again sidelined by his nagging quad issue. Since then there have been reports of friction between the Spurs and their superstar forward, but Leonard put an end to any rumors about his future, stating that he wants to finish his career in San Antonio. Following from ESPN’s Michael C. Wright:
Kawhi just spoke and said he wants to finish his career as a Spur.

For Spurs fans and members within the organization itself, this news has to be a relief, though there is a chance head coach Gregg Popovich and others already knew they had nothing to be worried about.
Even though the two parties may not have always been on the same page regarding his injury’s status, the chances that there was any real tension between Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs are likely slim.
The Spurs are currently sitting in the thick of a crowded Western Conference playoff race at the 5th seed. With Leonard targeting another shot at a return in late March, his presence and knowing he’s committed for the future could be exactly what San Antonio needs to gain momentum heading into the postseason.
