San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard appears to be on the verge of making his season debut. According to Jeff McDonald of mysanantonio.com, Spurs’ coach Gregg Popovich says Leonard is down to the “last steps” of recovery from a quadriceps injury. The team has, however, not given a specific time frame for Leonard’s return.
Kawhi Leonard was injured in last year’s Western Conference Finals against the Golden State Warriors. He landed on the foot of Zaza Pachulia and was lost for the rest of the series. “He’s starting to feel in a little bit better shape and feeling more confident,” Popovich said via McDonald. “When he says, ‘I feel I can go,’ then he’s got to convince me,” Popovich said. “Because I’m going to err on the conservative side. We’ll see. He’s too valuable to bring back early.”
Despite not having their best scorer and defender, the Spurs are 15-7 and fresh off a victory over the struggling Memphis Grizzlies. San Antonio recently got back point guard Tony Parker from a torn quadriceps injury too, so the team may finally get getting their roster back healthy. The Spurs have faired well without Kawhi Leonard, but putting him back out on the floor will make San Antonio much more lethal.
