Over the years, the College Football Playoff National Championship has attempted to mirror the Super Bowl with its high-profile, halftime show performances. In years past, Kendrick Lamar, Imagine Dragons and others have shined during the biggest night in college football. This year, all eyes will be on global pop star Katy Perry. ESPN has revealed that Katy Perry plans to debut her “When I’m Gone” music video during halftime of this year’s national championship game.
“The National Championship is the perfect stage to infuse breakthrough music into our broadcast,” Laura Gentile of ESPN said in a press release.
“Collaborating with world-renowned artists Alesso and Katy Perry to create a big-time halftime experience for fans will only add to this cultural moment.”
This is not Perry’s first time working with ESPN for a major college football event. In 2014, she served as the College GameDay guest picker at the University of Mississippi prior to Ole Miss’ upset of Alabama.
“When it comes to my music videos we all know I like to push the boundaries and myself, and create unique opportunities for my fans to see them,” the pop star said.
“ESPN and especially College GameDay hold a special place in my heart, so partnering with Alesso to become the first artists to ever debut a global music video within a live event on ESPN made for a perfect and natural pairing.”
The 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship is set for January 10, 2022 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. The game will feature the winner of the two semifinal games set to take place on December 31, 2021 in Arlington, Texas and Miami, Florida.
