On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Vice President Kamala Harris will wake up in unfamiliar territory. For the first time in more than 20 years, she will not hold public office. Since 2004, the Howard University graduate has either been the District Attorney of San Francisco, Attorney General of California, a member of Congress or the Vice President of the United States of America.
While she may be in unfamiliar territory, she and her husband, Second Gentleman Dough Emhoff, appear to have a plan in place. According to multiple reports, the two will move back to California and are looking at apartments in New York. As for their career aspirations, Emhoff reportedly hopes to return to legal work while Harris is reportedly entertaining the idea of running for governor in her home state in 2026. In the meantime, Harris is expected to work on a book regarding her career, personal interests and much more.
“Kamala Harris is poised to land the biggest book deal of any vice president in history,” Javelin President Keith Urbahn told NBC News.
“But the real question isn’t the advance — it’s whether the book can redefine her for 2028.”
Beyond financial gain, Urbahn also believes the book could open the door for her to run for President a third time. However, he feels she would need to position herself as the leader of a revitalized Democratic Party.
“There’s a version of this book that is full of platitudes but safe, and then there’s a version that reinvents her to lead a Democratic Party in need of rebuilding,” he continued.
“She gets a payday either way, but only the latter gets her a second shot at the presidency.”
Before she can cash in, she’ll need to make a decision about whether or not she wants to write a book at all. Sources close to the Vice President have offered conflicting reports about the book, with some saying its a done deal while others say she’s still weighing her options.
