Harris has a longstanding connection to the District of Columbia. She has worked in the nation’s capital since she was elected as a U.S. Senator in 2016. Since then, she’s launched two presidential campaigns and became Vice President. However, her relationship with the nation’s capital runs deeper than her political career.
In the early 1980s, Harris made her way from Vanier College in Montreal, Quebec to Howard University in Washington, D.C. During her time at the historically Black university, she earned a degree in political science and became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. When she was inaugurated as the first Black female Vice President in American history, the Howard University marching band served as her escort.
