Nearly one year ago, Juan Francisco Estrada defeated Román González by split decision and won the WBA Super Flyweight Title. Given the competitive nature of the last fight, Estrada and González agreed to meet for a rematch this March in San Diego, California. Unfortunately, Estrada has tested positive for COVID-19 and it appears that he will be unable to fight in March.
Román González is still committed to fighting this March in San Diego. To keep things on track, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom have secured a high-profile replacement for the upcoming event. WBC Flyweight Champion Julio Cesar Martinez plans to move up to fight González in San Diego, California on March 5, 2022. No championship belts will be on the line, but a victory could put Martinez in position for a title shot later this year.
“I am thrilled that I am able to move up in weight and fight the very best straight away,” Martinez said, according to Bad Left Hook.
“Chocolatito is a living legend and a fighter I have always admired, so to be fighting him in my first fight at super flyweight is special — but on the night, it’s going to be war and I am ready for it.”
The fight will be held at Penchanga Arena in San Diego, California and broadcast on DAZN this March as previously scheduled.
