Do you really want to win? Do you really want to fight for your success? When all things are equal, how much do you really want to have your hand raised when the scores are read? “Want to” is often the deciding factor in any major championship prizefight or mixed martial arts match. It’s also the deciding factor in practically every other facet of life. In the case of rising Baltimore artist John Wells, the “want to” is clear. Whether it’s honoring the legacy of his late father or simply striving for a better life, the “want to” is clear in every hook, bar and metaphor.
“I’m going to make a million dollars this year and I ain’t ashamed of it,” he raps.
John Wells may not have been able to take the stage at this year’s Summer Days festival at Pier Six Pavillion due to an unforeseen cancellation, but he still found a way to offer a gift to his fans. Coming in at just under two minutes, “I Did It For The Gang” is a slow, soul-stirring declaration put to motion over a guitar. Serving a pledge of allegiance of sorts for his future of success, the 101-second track finds John Wells not only discussing his desire to make one million dollars, but also his motivation to do so.
“I’m going to make a million dollars this year and I ain’t ashamed of it. [I] wish I could pay this sh*t to my grandmother, man. [I] swear to god if I could show this sh*t to my father, he would sh*t his pants,” he continues.
There are a few numbers in his phone that may not ring again, but the Baltimore native is just as motivated to make them proud with his next track. Check out the latest step in John Wells’ journey to making his first million dollars below.
