John Gotti is one of America’s most famous mob bosses. His trademark style and flair separated him from an often times very secretive pack. Though his propensity towards excess and fame eventually led to his downfall, there is still a lot to be learned by examining his climb up to the top of the mafia totem pole. Due to his widespread notoriety within pop culture, and the avenues his family has explored since his passing, it’s easy to overlook just how much of a ruthless gangster he truly was. The FBI has estimated during his reign as the boss of the Gambino crime family that Gotti was in charge of over 60,000 mafia soldiers and had links to over 350,000 mafia connected associates. The FBI followed that up by stating that he personally ordered the killings of over 600 people. While Gotti was certainly flamboyant, he definitely did not favor style over substance.
