John Boyega will not be entering the multiverse anytime soon. During a recent interview with Men’s Health, Boyega was questioned about rumors that he’d appear in The Marvels or the next Captain Marvel film. Without shooting down the possibility of becoming a superhero later in life, he simply said that it’s “not in the vision” for him at the moment.
“That’s not in the vision for me now,” Boyega said.
“I want to do nuanced things…I want to donate my services to original indie films that come with new, fresh ideas, because I know it’s real hard to top ‘Iron Man’ in that universe.”
Boyega’s agent, Femi Oguns, appears to be on the same page with his client. He also told the publication that Boyega’s ultimate goal is “to disrupt the industry and also to make history.”
“For John, it was never about trying to fit into the box. He wants to be the outline of the box,” Oguns explained.
In hopes of achieving this goal, Boyega has pivoted away from his Star Wars fame and toward films like The Woman King and The Test. More recently, he starred in the first trailer for the gripping thriller, Breaking. Starring alongside the late, great Michael K. Williams, the film will tell the story of a Black marine veteran named Brian Brown-Easley.
“When Marine Veteran Brian Brown-Easley is denied support from Veterans Affairs, financially desperate and running out of options, he takes a bank and several of its employees’ hostage, setting the stage for a tense confrontation with the police. Based on the true story,” the trailer’s description reads.
Boyega’s Breaking will debut in late August and The Woman King will debut in September. However, The Test does not quite have a release date just yet.
With three major new projects and his own innovative production company, actor and activist @JohnBoyega is muscling way beyond #StarWars.
