Jamel Herring and Shakur Stevenson are nearing a deal for a title fight in the 130-pound division this fall. The latest reports to emerge from Top Rank indicate that the fight will in fact take place in Atlanta, Georgia. October 23 has emerged as the most likely date for the fight, but there is a chance it could take place in November. In any event, it will be aired on ESPN through Top Rank’s broadcasting deal with the self-proclaimed worldwide leader in sports. At this time, the only thing that appears to be up in the air is the venue at which the title fight will take place. Beyond the venue, Stevenson’s manager, James Prince, assures everything is in place and the fight will move forward this fall.
“We are in agreement with everything,” Prince told ESPN’s Mike Coppinger on Monday.
“It’s a done deal. We’re just waiting on the date.”
Herring is in agreement with Stevenson and Prince. He is looking forward to the fight and is simply waiting for an exact date, so he began his training camp.
“I’ve been happy with what’s been put on paper. I’ve been ready to go,” Herring added.
“For me, I just want to have the set date so I can prepare a full training camp and go out there and fight my heart out. That’s all I wanna do.”
Herring enters the fight as the WBO Super Featherweight Champion. In his last fight, he stopped Carl Frompton Jr. in the sixth round. Meanwhile, Stevenson enters this showdown as the interim WBO Super Featherweight Title. In his last fight, he outclassed Jeremia Nakathila en route to a unanimous decision. With his amateur pedigree and undefeated record, Stevenson is the favorite to win this fight and earn a showdown with fellow super featherweight titlist Oscar Valdez Jr.
