Jack Catterall may not have the opportunity to fight Josh Taylor for the WBO super lightweight title. However, he may be on track to fight for the next best thing. During a recent interview, Catterall told Sky Sports that he is attempting to finalize a deal to fight WBC Super Lightweight Champion Regis Prograis.
“Talks are ongoing now. I believe we’re not too far off. As long as Regis is happy and accepts the fight I don’t think we’re a million miles away. Most definitely [I’d take that next]. I’m not interested in a tune-up,” Catterall told Sky Sports.
Catterall’s potential opponent, Regis Prograis, is riding high after knocking out Jose Zepeda to win the WBC Super Lightweight Championship. The Louisiana native has won four consecutive fights by stoppage since losing to Josh Taylor in 2019.
Catterall has been a bit less active. Having fought only three times in nearly four years, he has won two fights by decision and lost his first shot at a world title by controversial decision. Initially, he attempted to obtain a rematch with Josh Taylor, but it appears that Taylor will look to fight Teofimo Lopez later this year instead.
In the immediate future, Subriel Matias and Jeremias Ponce will fight for the IBF Super Lightweight Championship on February 25 at 9 p.m. EST.
