The adaptation of Stephen King’s novel ‘IT’ by Warner Brothers has been an absolute sensation at box offices around the world. People these days just can’t get enough of scary clowns for some reason. The movie, featuring a creepy clown named Pennywise, has demolished records left and right and to top it off has become the highest grossing R-Rated scary movie in the U.S… EVER!
If you’re like me, you haven’t watched the movie, but you’re waiting for some liquid courage to watch it. If you have watched it, I’m sure you’ll know exactly why Warner Brothers is planning it’s sequel already and has a release date planned. Today both New Line and Warner Brothers have announced that Chapter 2 will release on September 6th 2019.
Collider News Reports (VIA THR):
IT screenwriter Gary Dauberman will be returning to pen the sequel. Though there has been no official announcement, it’s presumed that Andy Muschietti will be returning to direct. With such a huge success on their hands, in fact, it’s unlikely that much will change in terms of producers, etc, as well. There will, of course, be some new cast members, as Chapter 1 took place in the past, and Chapter 2 will be in the present. However, the beloved stars of Chapter 1 will also reportedly be appearing in the sequel in flashbacks, so fear not.
Despite this movie being called a sequel, it really does borrow directly from Stephen King’s books. The books revolve around a group of young teenagers who band together to stop this demon clown, once as children and then again as adults. THR Explains more:
King’s opus tells of a group of friends who band together to defeat their small town’s demon — first as kids and then a second time as adults. While the book toggles between the young and older characters, New Line structured its adaptation so that the first movie focuses on the kids and is set in the past, with the second movie to be set in the present and will focus on the adults. (In the book, the past was the 1950s; the movie’s past is the 1980s.)
As a person who hates clowns, I’m not looking forward to this. As a person who loves movies and box office news, I look forward to seeing if the second chapter of the franchise will resonate the same way it did this year.
