Instagram is reportedly testing a feature that would allow users to post photos and videos to their feed from their desktop. The social media app confirmed the news to Tech Crunch earlier this week.
“We know that many people access Instagram from their computer,” an Instagram spokesperson said.
“To improve that experience, we’re now testing the ability to create a Feed post on Instagram with their desktop browser.”
This is a major step up for the social media giant. In 2017, Instagram made the move to allow users to view stories. Just last year, the company added direct messaging for desktop users. For a long time, the company feared that desktop use would cannibalize the use of the app. However, data scientists have not found that to be true.
“We haven’t found any evidence that the Instagram desktop web experience cannibalizes engagement from the native apps,” a data scientist from Instagram explained to Tech Crunch.
“In fact, it’s quite the opposite — users who use both interfaces spend more time on each interface, compared to users who use each interface exclusively.”
Facebook has not yet indicated when they will look to roll this feature out to the public.
