The Cleveland Cavaliers shocked the world and the Golden State Warriors when they came back from 3-1 to beat the defending champion Warriors in 7 games. They broke the cities curse of an NBA championship and now are looking to build off that momentum into next season. After tons of speculation that they will be looking to trade Kevin Love this offseason and try to shake up their core, Cavs GM David Griffin refuted those reports.
Griffin went onto the NBA Lockdown Insiders radio show and was asked about the future of the Cavaliers, mentioning he intends to keep their core together:
“We do intend to keep this group together and see what we’re capable of,” Griffin told the show.?
“I think our best basketball’s in front of us because we finally organically grew to the point that we were ready to achieve something together,” Griffin said. “And so I expect you’re going to see better play from Kyrie Irving, who I think took a huge jump both as an individual talent and a winner throughout these playoffs. [And] I think Kevin’s fit with us is much more clearly defined. “
The only real case for shaking up an NBA champions core is if you see something that would make you better as a team, but most the times that’s not the case. The player that struggled the most from the core of the Cavaliers in the Finals was Kevin Love, and he had seemed to find his stride in Game 7 when it mattered most. Irving and James were arguably both MVP’s and J.R Smith is the iconic no shirt man, so it looks like the Cavaliers are going to be going into next season looking to repeat with the same core.
