WBA “Regular” Lightweight Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis has reportedly pleaded guilty to four charges stemming from a hit-and-run incident in November 2020 that left four people injured, including a pregnant woman.
The prosecution and Gervonta Davis’ lead defense attorney, Michael Tomko, appear to have come to a plea agreement that will allow Circuit Judge Althea M. Handy to determine the boxer’s punishment at a hearing on May 5, 2023.
The Baltimore native’s most recent legal troubles are connected to an incident that reportedly occurred on November 5, 2020. According to Maryland Assistant Attorney David Owens, the boxer appeared at a nightclub in Baltimore on November 5 and requested a police escort back to the Four Seasons Hotel. Initially, there was one police car ahead of Davis’ car and one behind his car. As they made their way from the hotel, Davis is accused of ditching the police escort, running a red light, hitting another car and crashing into the fence of a 7-Eleven. Shortly after the crash, surveillance video appears to show Davis getting out of his car, entering another vehicle and fleeing the scene.
In September, attorneys representing Gervonta Davis and legal representatives reportedly reached a plea deal that included no jail time for the boxer. However, Circuit Judge Melissa M. Phinn nixed the deal after hearing from a witness by the name of Jyair Smith. Smith, who was pregnant at the time, says she was in the car that was hit on November 5 and suffered an injury to her knee.
“I begged Mr. Gervonta Davis; I looked him in his eyes,” Smith told the court.
“I said, ‘I have to get home to my daughter, I’m pregnant.’ He never once came over to help me.”
“Nobody from that car that hit them got out of the car and had the decency to help any of the people in my client’s car,” Smith’s civil attorney, Gil Amaral, added.
“Think about that for a minute.”
Davis is free on his own recognizance until his May 5 sentencing hearing. In a separate case, he is scheduled to be arranged in Broward County Court on February 23, 2023. His legal troubles in Florida stem from a December 2022 incident in which he was accused of hitting the mother of his child. However, the mother of his child and Davis have both refuted reports that their dispute became physical and violent.
