The South Carolina Gamecocks have fired Head Coach Frank Martin after ten seasons with the program. His tenure with the South Carolina Gamecocks was less than ideal and did not see the level of success that either side was hoping for in the tenure. The program reportedly debated if a move needed to be made and decided it was time to move on from their longtime head basketball coach. The 2022 NCAA coaching carousel continues.

Frank Martin and the South Carolina program never quite took off like both sides were hoping it would. In ten seasons with the program, he led the team to an overall record of 171-147 with an SEC record of 79-99. The magical 2017 NCAA Tournament run to the Final Four is the sole season that the team made the NCAA Tournament. They only made the NIT once although they were potentially in line for a bid the year the NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19. This is not the level of success that was hoped for when Martin left the Kansas Wildcats State for South Carolina.

The SEC is in a transitional period this season and talented coaches that can win are a must. Texas and Oklahoma both have good programs and will be in the SEC soon. While there is no doubt that Frank Martin is a talented Head Coach, winning is what matters in college basketball. South Carolina will look for a new coach and it is unlikely that Martin is done coaching basketball.
