Unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. is currently preparing for the biggest fight of his career, but many are already looking ahead to an even bigger fight that could occur next year. During a recent interview with The Pivot, Spence Jr. addressed rumors that he may fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the near future. According to the Texas native, it’s something he’s considered, but he remains focused on his upcoming fight with Terence Crawford on Saturday, July 29.
“Canelo [has signed] a new deal with PBC and there’s already chatter. [His] first fight [will be against Jermell] Charlo. At the end of that, they say Errol Spence Being a superstar as you are, is [that a fight] you’re looking to be a part of in the future?” Ryan Clark asked Spence Jr.
“I definitely considered [it], but right now I’m just 100% focused on Terence Crawford. There have been no talks about [a fight with] Canelo. [We haven’t] been talking about Canelo or anything like that. It’s been all [about] Terence Crawford. Even when they were talking about Keith Thurman, it’s been all Terence Crawford. My thing has always been…I want Terence Crawford. Canelo [is] cool. That’s a super fight. That’s great money. My whole thing is that [a fight with] Terence Crawford [brings in] great money too,” Spence Jr. answered.
The unified welterweight champion will have an opportunity to put all of his hard work and preparation to use when he meets Crawford in the ring at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday. Weeks later, Spence Jr.’s stablemate, Jermell Charlo, will have the chance to dethrone Canelo Alvarez at the same venue.
