After years of anticipation, it appears that Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. will share the ring and fight for the men’s undisputed welterweight title. After Errol Spence Jr. stopped Yordenis Ugas in the 10th round to win the WBA Welterweight Championship, he told Jim Gray that he is looking to fight Crawford later this year.
“Everybody knows who I want next, I want Terence Crawford next. That’s the fight that I want, that’s the fight everybody else wants,” he said.
“Terence, I’m coming for that motherf*ckin’ belt.”
Crawford heard Spence Jr.’s words and took to Twitter to share his thoughts. As confident as ever, he told the Texas native that he is coming to take his three titles from him.
“Errol Spence Jr., congratulations! [You fought a] great fight! Now, the real fight happens. No more talk. Let’s go,” Crawford tweeted.
“Keep my belts warm. I’ll be coming to grab ’em later this year.”
Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza also seems determined to make the fight happen. Leading up to Spence Jr.’s title fight on April 16, 2022, he said that the fight was a more realistic possibility now than it had been in the past.
“There haven’t really been any discussions about it yet obviously, but I would say I’m more optimistic now than I was a few months ago simply because some of the obstacles are out of the way. And I’m not saying Top Rank is an obstacle per se, but their deal with ESPN and who they do business with — it’s one of the obstacles that’s now removed. There are no limitations in terms of promoters or networks, and I think that makes things a lot easier,” Espinoza said when asked about a potential Crawford-Spence Jr. bout.
With eight months left in the year, hopefully a deal can be reached by the end of 2022.
