Louisiana State University Head Football Coach Ed Orgeron is expected to part ways with the program 21 months after winning the 2020 College Football Playoff. ESPN reports that Orgeron will coach the team throughout the remainder of the season, but he will not return next season. A replacement for Orgeron has not yet been named.
Overall, the Tigers have gone 49-17 and 13-5 against top 10 opponents. With Orgeron steering the ship, the LSU Tigers won the national championship in early 2020. However, things have not been great since then. LSU finished 5-5 last season with losses to Texas A&M and Alabama by a combined 51 points. This season, things have also been difficult. The Tigers are currently 3-3 with losses against UCLA, Auburn and Kentucky.
However, the timing of the announcement is a bit peculiar. Yesterday, the Tigers won a shootout against #20 Florida. Within the next three weeks, the Tigers will play three ranked teams, Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss.
#LSU and Ed Orgeron have reached a separation agreement: He will not return in 2022 but expected to complete this season, sources tell @SINow.
Negotiations began last week before UF win.
It’s unprecedented in the sport – coach & school divorcing 21 months after winning it all.
