A woman shot and killed in South Side Chicago on Friday was confirmed to be Dwyane Wade’s cousin, according to ABC7 Eyewitness News.
The woman was walking with a child when she was caught in the crossfire of a gunfight. She suffered injuries to her head and arm and pronounced dead when she arrived at the hospital. The child was unharmed and is in the custody of a family member.
Wade, who recently moved to Chicago to join his hometown Bulls, was not in town at the time of the incident. He had joined an ESPN roundtable regarding similar violence on Thursday. Wade has been an outspoken member of the movement by athletes to become voices for change regarding violence.
Chicago’s South Side is notorious for gang violence with one of, if not the highest gun-related killing rates in the country.
Investigators have made clear that Wade’s cousin was not the intended victim of the shooting. She was a bystander when the incident occurred.
One person is currently being questioned regarding the incident. The shooting is still under investigation, according to ABC.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Dwyane Wade and the rest of his family as they mourn this tragic loss.
