Just a little over three weeks until the highly anticipated release of N.W.A’s story, Straight Outta Compton, coming to life, some of its founding members are finally speaking out in support of the film’s release. Taking to the cover of the respected The Hollywood Reporter magazine, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and 3 of the film’s leading actors (O’Shea Jackson Jr., Jason Mitchell, and Corey Hawkins) voice everything from drama during the various creative processes, all the way to their support and it’s timely release due to current events.
“It’s crazy how we were getting criticized for this years ago,” says Dre of N.W.A’s provocative songs about inner-city life. “And now, it’s just like, ‘OK, we understand.’ This movie will keep shining a light on the problem, especially because of all the situations that are happening in Ferguson and here in Los Angeles. It’s definitely going to keep this situation in people’s minds and make sure that everyone out there knows that this is a problem that keeps happening still today.”
Interestingly enough, Universal Pictures’ chairman, Donna Langley, expressed the possibility of a N.W.A. reunion tour with the help of Eminem. She went on to say:
“We don’t have anything settled yet with everyone’s schedules,” she says. “But we think it can create a lot of buzz.”
Tour or no tour, the anticipation is more than there across the board to finally see one of Hip-Hop’s most legendary contributors have their story come to life on the big screen. You can read the whole interview, here, and be sure to support Straight Outta Compton when it hits theaters on August 14th.
