Kentucky Wildcats guard Dontaie Allen has announced he will stay in state and transfer to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The Kentucky Wildcats program is no stranger to players transferring out and transferring in over the past few years and Allen joins a list of players that just didn’t quite find the role they wanted on the roster. With the new one-time transfer exemption in place for the NCAA now this has become a more common occurrence for programs in college basketball.

Dontaie was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school, but never quite found the role he wanted with the Kentucky Wildcats. His role actually diminished in his second season with the program. As a sophomore with Kentucky, he averaged 2.2 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. That is down from 5.4 points and 1.5 rebounds per game from his freshman year. His field goal percentage also dropped from 39 percent to 29.4 percent and his three-point percentage fell from 39.7 percent to 18.9 percent. Now he has a chance to reset and play with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

Dontaie Allen was named Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball in 2019 and with this move stays in his home state to continue to play college basketball. The hope is that with a program like Western Kentucky he can find a larger role and thrive in that role. While he may not have gotten the role he wanted at Kentucky this is a fresh start for the former top recruit. The Hilltoppers are a solid program and are good at getting the best out of the recruits they have within the program.
