Do you ever find yourself getting stuck with the tight end that completely ruins your fantasy season? Let’s take a look at some of the tight ends who “experts” have been predicting will have a great season, but won’t. When I listen to fantasy talk this time of year, I often find myself shaking my head.
- Rob Gronkowski (Patriots)
Rob Gronkowski is a great player but he got hit with the cover of madden this year. Even if you don’t believe in the Madden curse, he probably won’t have the same type of season he did a year ago. This time he has Martellus Bennett on his team. Bennett like when Aaron Hernandez was there, will steal targets away from Gronk in the middle of the field. Gronk is still the number one tight end on my board, I just tend to think the gap between him and Jordan Reed is fairly close.
2. Delanie Walker (Titans)
Walker had a sort of breakout season a year ago as he neared a 100 catch season. This time the Titans and the rest of the offense have a different game plane, running the football. Quarterback Marcus Mariota has already said they could hand the ball off as many as 40 times per game. With Derrick Henry and DeMarco Murray running down hill it may not be a bad idea. This would take a ton of time off the clock and reduce the number of targets Walker will get in return. To me he is not a top 5 tight end option and fantasy players should look elsewhere when it comes to taking a tight end early in drafts.
3. Zach Ertz (Eagles)
I have never really understood the buzz that gets placed around Zach Ertz. Every year it seems like Ertz is placed among the top ten tight ends and never produces. Last year Ertz only caught 2 touchdowns in Chip Kelly’s offense. The year before he only caught 3 as his career high is only 4 touchdowns in a season. I’m sorry but why draft a guy that isn’t going to score touchdowns? There are a ton of other tight end options that have much higher ceilings than Ertz does.
4. Antonio Gates (Chargers)
Gates is nearing the end of the road and they drafted a tight end early in the 2016 NFL Draft for a reason. At this point Gates probably isn’t a high end tight end option and could lose some touches later in the year as they work Hunter Henry into the rotation. Gates is one of the best to ever do it but he probably isn’t worth drafting.
