Ray Allen hasn’t played a game of NBA basketball since he lost to the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals as a member of the Miami Heat. Has he wanted to get back? Yeah, maybe a little. He has stayed in shape and thought about signing with a team on multiple occasions. This summer, there were rumors going around about him coming back to the game to play for the Golden State Warriors and several other teams.
Is Ray still able to play? Doc Rivers recently spoke with ESPN’s Chris Forberg about this very topic:
Doc Rivers has talked with Ray Allen this summer. Does he think he’ll play again? “I don’t know. I won’t talk about what we talked about. I think if Ray was in the right spot he may play. I think Ray wants to golf a lot, too, right now. But Ray is in amazing shape. I don’t know how he does that. I didn’t know how he does that as a player; I don’t know how he does it as a non-player. He’s probably in top-5 shape in the NBA. So could Ray play? Absolutely, I believe he could.”
Is Doc trying to help his friend Ray get on a team by talking him up or is he being truthful? I think that Doc knows Ray is in good shape, but if he was in “top-5 shape in the NBA” I think that he would just go ahead and sign Jesus Shuttlesworth to the Clippers. Ray wants to come back though, and I think he would sign if a winning team offered.
Imagine having Ray Allen and J.J. Redick on the same team. As soon as you think you’re done with having to stop Redick’s sharpshooting, here comes Allen, the NBA’s best all-time 3-point shooter!
