Interview: DJ Folk Talks CTE, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Control’ Verse, NYC Rap Scene, Jeezy & More

  • August 14, 2013
  • Jared Brown

Folk: Everything Boi-1da produced for artists other than Drake. Jeezy had ‘Not Afraid’ by Eminem before Em had it. It was that batch of beats that Jeezy found ‘Scared Money’. He just didn’t feel it when he heard it. I believe I sent ‘No Lie’ to Wayne when Mike Will sent it to me in like Jan 2012.

Low Key I almost alley ooped Mike Will on Carter IV as well. Shout to Mike it was a mis-communication. I’m happy for Mike, he really out here killing shit. Anyone who gets the money and help people get money that shit is how it should be. Big up the Ear Drummas

Def Pen: Yesterday the “Boss Ya Life Up” compilation album dropped, what was your involvement with that project and what can you tell us about the album itself?

Folk: I was there for probably 5-6 studio sessions prior to these sessions. I hadn’t been in the studio (with Jeezy) for about 7 months. I got a couple on there from what I know “The Intro” for sure but I want everyone to be surprised when they hear it.

Def Pen: Speaking of which, will we see a new DJ Folk tape anytime soon?

Folk: I was working on the Folk tape, I kinda scrapped it to focus my time and energy on other things I might drop like 8 songs from it as an ep/mixtape. Prolly do Highgrade 3 for JIGG, unless a Young or Birdman hits me I consider myself retired from actively doing mixtapes.

Def Pen: Now what artists will be releasing projects from CTE and when can we expect them?

Folk: YG album coming really soon. Sounds good better than I expected when he played me songs off of it. Tha World Compilation thru Atlantic. DBCO working. Jeezy next album.

Def Pen: The streets are always hungry for new music from Jeezy, and I don’t want to put any pressure on you (laughs) but when can we expect a new Young album?

Folk: Ha! Young’s always working I really have no idea when it’s coming…He’s going to tell everyone when its bout ready. Jeezy always has some shit up his sleeve, you just gotta be ready for it.

Def Pen: Speaking of hungry, of course, you travel often. We here at Def Pen like to eat, what’s some of your favorite spots to eat at?

Folk: In Atlanta La Fontanda on Howell Mill RD. Buena Vista in Rome, GA both Mexican spots great food. Toronto I like Fran’s Diner. In NYC DIG INN and SMac. I love Nandos when I’m in the UK, regular spots nothing crazy.

Def Pen Radio: Now it’s no secret you’re heavy into sneakers, when did you first begin collecting kicks?

Folk: I had the Grape 5 Og’s and Dominique Wilkins pumps as a kid. That’s where I think it started like 90-91 around then.

Def Pen: In your collection right now, what’s your top 5 kicks?

Folk: Og flu game 12’s, the first team Jordan’s from 97-98, a pair of Bapes from 2002, black Quai 54 5’s and 2001 Jordan 1’s all of them that dropped.

Def Pen: The sneaker game has changed tremendously over the years how do you feel about its current state?

Folk: Resell game got it crazy, the hype is out of control…but it’s peaked I think the decline will start towards the end of 2014 at least Jordan wise. Everything else is cool, retros are out of control.

Def Pen: What do you think has been the most over-hyped sneaker over the last year or so?

Folk: Bred 11’s by far. People getting killed over sneakers or robbed is just too much. I’m not a fan of 11’s personally…black grapes were overhyped and I like them but they were overhyped. Denim LeBron too.

Def Pen: There’s no debate Jordan has the best signature sneaker line, who do you think comes second?

Folk: Lebrons. Since he’s won 2 rings, he’s in 2nd for now.

Def Pen Radio: Now I want you to chime in on a slight debate we been having here at Def Pen Radio over the past few months. Now the urban modeling game is somewhat all over the place. In your opinion who’s the top 3 baddest chicks when it comes to this modeling thing?

Folk: Cyn Santana always holds in my top 3. That’s like my little sister in real life. We kinda distant right now, but she my nigga after all the lights dim on both our careers.

Sabrina Athena for sure. That’s my real life friend as well, bout 6’0 green eyes from Detroit tatted former track star. She did Urban Ink and Rip The Runway. She A+++

I love Pamela Alexander for sure. Brazilian women.

Sharigem on Twitter. I have a soft spot for Dominican women like she’s amazing. I had to let her know that shit the other day. Sharina I’m gonna send this interview to you too ma. (Laughs)

Def Pen: Before we wrap this up, I definitely want to say Def Pen salutes you especially for being in this game such a long time and remaining consistent. Not an easy feat. Keep the grind strong.

Folk: Thank y’all. Retirement looms in December for the kid from the music business. I’m going on to bigger shit in life. I wanna thank Def Pen and my supporters for being there throughout my career. Its all love on this end from me.
